Readme attachments ================== Original Author: Arjan Haverkamp May 18, 2000 arjan@avoid.org http://www.avoid.org Updated by: Jason Birch June 27, 2000 jason@phorum.org ================== Please note that the attachment support provided in this version of Phorum has very limited security features. Do not enable this option unless you know what you're doing. This file is based on the file attachment support documentation provided by Arjan Haverkamp. As a note, the official Phorum file upload capability differs from the original code in the way that files are stored and retreived, and in the way that the directory is specified. * NOTE: the words 'upload' and 'attachment' are used interchangebly in this document. Here's what you need to do in order to get the attachment-feature to work. - Install Phorum, using the files in this distribution, as usual (see readme.txt for details). - Create a directory somewhere (preferrably in the document-root directory of the webserver Phorum is running on) where the attachments will be stored. Then make sure this directory is readable, writable and executable for the user your webserver is running as (nobody in most cases). e.g.: mkdir /project/phorum/htdocs/uploaded chmod 707 /project/phorum/htdocs/uploaded - Go to the phorum admin pages. - Click "Phorum Setup". - Click "Files/Paths". - Enter the Attachment Directory: The attachment-directory should be an absolute (filesystem) directory where the attachments will be stored. I use a directory called 'uploaded' in the document-root directory of the server that Phorum is running on. f.e: Attachment-dir: /project/phorum/htdocs/uploaded (You need to start the directory with a slash '/', and not end it in one.) * NOTE: if you don't allow attachments to be uploaded in any forum, leave the attachment-dir empty! - Now create a new forum as usual. You can decide on a per-forum-basis whether or not to allow uploads. Just check the correct radio-button at 'Allow uploads?'. - If you checked 'yes' at 'Allow uploads?', a new directory is created inside the general attachment-directory. All attachments uploaded in this forum will be stored in this subdirectory. - Now test your newly created forum. If you allowed uploads, you should see a file-upload input-field in the post-form. Upload any file here, and check if this file appears again when you read your posted message. If it does not show up, check the permissions of the general attachment- directory. Remember: this directory has to be readable, writable and executable for the user the webserver is running as (usually 'nobody'). That's all! Note that you can delete attachments using the admin-interface. When editing a message, you can delete an attachment you don't like with or without deleting the message itself.
